Octopussy
Hello Welcome!

There are lots of things to do in and around Hua Hin. On this page are just a couple of things to see that are worth the trouble of hiring a taxi or car for the day.

Market Village

Has lots of designer label shops, a Tesco Lotus and Home Pro. A multi lane bowling alley and a Cineplex. KFC, Pizza Company, Sizzler, a Japanese fast food restaurant and a few Thai outlets  Market Village has three floors, the top floor is the Cineplex, bowling and some mobile phone shops.

Index

Is to the north of town before the airport sells furniture and items for home decoration along side this is Pure Electric selling TV's and white goods plus cameras satellite systems and air conditioning units.

 Go Karting

The track is just north of town for the petrol heads with a need for speed prices are reasonable, different engine sizes and even two seater's can be rented for about half a hour at a time, a sophisticated timing system displays your lap times live and you can get a print out to impress your mates..

KhaoTakiap

Is the next beach to the south about ten minutes in a Tuk Tuk, this beach is very nice about 3 km long with some good food places at the northern end, there's jet skies and Banana boats if that's your thing. About three quarters of the way down is a Army run resort with bungalows.

Grand Market

Is open three or four nights a week it has different themes on different nights, temporary markets are now very popular and there should be one open somewhere in town every night. A scooter is your best bet at around two hundred baht a day for exploring the outskirts of Hua Hin.

Temples

Are good places to explore make sure you are properly dressed and shoes should be remove before entering most temple buildings, there is even one with giant cat fish that you can feed for a few Baht.

Fishing

There are a few places with fresh water fish all equipment can be hired. One lake north of cha Am has giant cat fish that can take hours to haul in, there are a couple of places west of town. It is possible to go night fishing with local fishermen best to inquire at one of the fresh water lakes or at the fishing pier if you know a local to translate for you.

Shooting

Just north of town is a private shooting range, it is possible to join for a fee take your passport along as well. Spend an afternoon being Dirty Harry. This link has a phone number, but the rest is in Thai. A new shooting range has opened on the right side of the highway as you head for Cha am.

Paint Ball

There is or was a paint ball field on the left south of town before the fly over.

Quad Bikes

Some quad bikes can be hired on Khao Takiab beach, but how long for I don't know. There may be a Quad park in Cha Am they move around a bit and don't seem to be open everyday best to look on weekends. (update) There is a quad bike track and paint ball field between Hua Hin and Cha Am it's well sign posted.

If you heading for the dam don't forget to check out Petchvarin Resort. This resort is highly recommended, food, accommodation and the resort grounds are all excellent. Western and Thai food is available, as well as morning coffee and afternoon tea. A jewel in the jungle.

Hua Hin

YOU CAN'T BE FIRST BUT YOU CAN BE NEXT

Hua Hin What's It Like

If this is your first trip to Hua Hin you may want to know what's it like here.

Most resorts in Thailand are new compared to Hua Hin, a lot of the buildings in the town centre are over sixty years old, at that time (and now) town planning was not a word you would hear and that's a plus for H Most of the streets are narrow with many different types of buildings making a stroll around town very interesting.

Hua Hin is not really a car friendly place, weekends can be hectic to say the least. Most people ignore road signs or just don't know what they mean. Early morning or the evenings is the best time to go for a wander after everyone else has finally found a place to park.

The fishing pier is a good place to take a few photo's there's usually something going on. The large boats were meant to be moved sometime ago but maybe someone forgot to tell them. There are lots of smaller squid boats which leave around sunset for a nights fishing.
Hua Hin is renowned for it's laid back life style, some people are in a hurry but your average Hua Hinian is in no hurry to get anywhere. With the arrival of western style shopping to town walking around the day and night market area takes you back to a time when everybody shopped here.

Some very fresh and tasty food can be bought from the stalls that line the streets.

Tables and chairs are available or you can have a take away and eat as you wander around.

This food is very fresh, the night market has high standards of hygiene (for Thailand).

Best to spend a penny before you get here as I've never seen a toilet anywhere. There may be loo's in the new day market which is on the right as you walk up the road towards the station.

T shirts, water pistols, sunglasses, toys and everything in between can be bought here as well.

This picture was taken when it was quiet expect to see hundreds of people here during the night.

Stop Me And Buy One

What would we do without the plastic bag and the mobile phone. This ladies bike may be over loaded, but she is wearing a helmet and has stopped to answer her phone.

This on the other hand is not a road safety poster, if you have to go shopping you have to go shopping. This picture sums up the different way people think in Asia. He was driving very slowly and yes just to cap it off he's on the wrong side of the road as well.

One of the most photographed buildings in Thailand. This is the Royal waiting room, built around the 1920's when the railway first came to town.

Small Fire Hill

On the other side of the tracks is the Royal Hua Hin golf course, just wander in and go for a walk around the course if you want to blend in get a pair of pink tartan plus fours and leave your Jaguar in the car park. Seriously check out Small Fire Hill lookout with some great views of the town.

Again not a great one, Hua Hin does have a beach this ones over 5Km's long. You should just have enough room. This is looking north from Chop Stick Hill or Monkey Mountain if you like. To the south is another beach with no con do's and some very good beach restaurants.

Not great pic's but it's down there in the haze.

Sorry about the haze I will try and get a better photo. The views on a good day are fantastic, there are several trails and lookout points the best is take the trail on the right before the main gate and climb up the rock, this spot has a breeze on the hottest days.

Kaeng Krachan National Park & Dam

This is the dam in the Kaeng Krachan national park excellent day out, fishing trips, swimming and rafting on the river.
There are plenty of eating places like this one, food quality is very good and prices are reasonable. Menus in English are available. Very popular on weekends and bank holidays.

I'm not scared, I'm just not sure if I want to. Oh well if I keep my eyes shut and hold on it will be ok. Hang on it's stopped, I'm slipping, I'm falling, great fun and not bad for someone who can't swim.

These pictures were taken just below the dam. There are canoes and rafts for rent as well as bungalows. The National park has lots of trails for all ages and fitness levels, camping sites and basic bungalows can be rented. Call in at the ranger station for info and prices.

This is my taxi guy, saying he needs one more minute to find his car keys, either that or this is the sign for I'm doing number ones in the drinking water.

Sea Of Fog

If you can get out of bed early enough get your taxi to show you the Sea Of Fog.

Dolphin Bay

This is a shot of Dolphin Bay about forty five minutes south of Hua Hin. A few low rise resorts line the beach rd, most will let you use their swimming pools if you buy lunch. Once you turn off the main highway at Pranburi the scenery improves and it's a pleasant drive follow the signs for Dolphin Bay Resort.

The resorts get very busy in high season there's no night life to speak of outside the resorts, if you want a nice place to visit or you want to stay a couple of nights and take a break from the bright lights of Hua Hin this is a good spot.

Maruekatayawan Palace

Maruekatayawan Palace which was constructed by His Majesty King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) in 1923, features three two-storey wooden pavilions facing the sea, located just north of town this is one of the oldest Royal residences in Thailand and longest teak palace in the world.

An entrance fee is payable 30 Baht and 15 Baht for children, and no shorts are allowed, the staff will let you borrow trousers, one size fits all. Best to bring your own to change into you won't win any fashion awards wearing these.

No trip to Thailand is complete without a white knuckle ride in a Tuk Tuk. You can rent these all over town from three seats up to the stretch Tuk Tuk that can seat up to eight people. Engines and drivers run on a mixture of palm oil and Red Bull, a trip across Bangkok is better than any amusement park ride in the world and a fraction of the price. Bangkok doesn't have a formula one circuit, the trip from Khao San Rd to Sukhumvit  is the closest thing and believe me these guys would leave Lewis Hamilton in a cloud of dust.
